Ever taken a chance on a laugh in English? 🎭

I want to tell you something that happened a few weeks ago.

In July I went (gift — thanks! 🎁) to see the famous British stand-up comedian Ricky Gervais in Milan — and I honestly didn’t expect it to be completely sold out. Standing in line, amid the buzz of the crowd, I found myself watching and listening: how many Italians, how many foreigners? And above all — how many nerves about English.

I overheard people whispering to each other: “I wonder if we’ll understand any jokes…”, “If the sound is good maybe we’ll get a laugh or two.” It struck me how many people were drawn to the experience despite their insecurity with the language. Then the magic of stand-up happened: laughs — lots of loud laughs that still echo in my ears!

I couldn’t help thinking about my students and wondering: would you have stayed home to watch the same show with subtitles, or would you have dared to go live? For me, it was lovely to see so many Italians take the leap — bringing the language with them like curiosity, not a burden.

Oggi ti voglio raccontare una cosa che mi è successa qualche settimana fa. A luglio sono andata (regalo! grazie 🎁) a vedere il famoso stand-up comedian britannico Ricky Gervais a Milano — e non mi aspettavo davvero che fosse tutto sold out. In fila, tra l’attesa e il chacchiericcio della folla, mi sono sorpresa a osservare e ad ascoltare: quanti italiani, quanti stranieri? E soprattutto — quanti timori sull’inglese.

Ho sentito persone ridacchiare tra "Chissà se capiremo qualche battuta…”, “Se l’audio è buono magari qualche risata ce la facciamo”. Mi ha colpito vedere così tanta gente attirata dall’esperienza, nonostante l’insicurezza con la lingua. E poi è successa la magia della stand-up comedy: risate, tante risate fragorose che ancora mi risuonano nelle orecchie!

Non ho potuto non pensare ai miei studenti e mi sono chiesta: tu saresti rimastə a casa a guardare lo stesso show con i sottotitoli, o avresti osato venire dal vivo? A me ha fatto piacere vedere tante persone italiane osare — e portare con sé la lingua come chi porta una curiosità, non un peso.
